Dr. de Mello and Integrative Medicine

This is about me, Jarra, and my doctor, Dr. de Mello. Before I met him, I was having bad tummy aches. They felt really bad. I threw up a lot. My throat would burn sometimes. At school, I always went to the nurse's office with a bad tummy ache or because I threw up in class. Then he told me to go on a diet and my tummy felt all better. Now I never get tummy aches because he helped me. He put me on a diet with no gluten, no wheat, no dairy, no eggs and no processed foods and now I feel all better!

This is Jarra's mommy, Nichole. Before we went to see Dr. de Mello, we had been to 2 pediatricians from Kaiser and had two different diagnoses over a period of 6 months. One was constipation and one was "functional pain" wherein the child feels abdominal pain which is never diagnosed and there is no treatment. After some resistance, we were able to see a pediatric GI specialist who diagnosed her with GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) and said that the only treatment was for her to take antacids for the rest of her life. I was not OK with this treatment plan so I looked into a different type of medicine called "Integrative Medicine" where the doctor has the M.D. yet applies it in a holistic way. In other words, he looks at the "whole" patient and not just at the symptoms they are experiencing as in Western medicine. Within 10 days of following Dr. de Mello's instructions, Jarra was a new child! We are writing this blog together in the hopes of helping others. We have already met others that are interested in looking into integrative medicine which is a growing field. Dr. de Mello is the founder and owner of the Akasha Center in Santa Monica, CA.
